Delta Waterfowl's “Hunting Communications Workshop” shows Hunters how to Promote and Defend Hunting

Robert SopuckLong Point, Ontario, July 26: Delta Waterfowl presented a “hunting communications workshop” designed by hunters for hunters who want to learn how to become effective spokespeople for hunting. Delta members and non- members alike were invited to learn about:

  • Anti- hunting organizations and how they work;
  • Proven messages that work for promoting and defending hunting;
  • Avoiding communications pitfalls, and the wrong messages about hunting;
  • Working with the political system at all levels to support hunting; and,
  • How to defend hunting and hunting access in your own backyard

“Delta Waterfowl’s hunting communications workshop provided Long Point hunters and others from southern Ontario with the information they need to become an effective ambassador for hunting,” said Dr. Robert O. Bailey, one of the two architects of the workshop.

Dr. Bailey stressed the importance of individual hunters speaking out to promote and defend hunting.  “Many hunters don’t know what to say when confronted by anti- hunters, or how to take control of a media interview,” said Mr. Robert D. Sopuck, “this workshop teaches media skills and gives hunters proven messages that promote hunting.”

Dr. Robert BaileyBailey and Sopuck presented the workshop to a group of about 25 hunters.  The workshop leaders have a wide range of experience in social and political advocacy, and in print and electronic media. Both workshop leaders emphasized the need for hunters to actively defend hunting in the media and to learn how to use the political system to support hunting.

“Delta Waterfowl is testing the workshop approach with hunters across the country,” added Dr. Bailey, “we will post a schedule of workshop events once the details have been worked out.”  Hunters are urged to consult the Delta Waterfowl website for information on upcoming workshops in their province.
